Meet the Founder – Sharad Kumar Vats

Thirty years ago, a single glimpse of a tiger in the grasslands of Kanha changed the trajectory of my life. I realized then that the wild doesn’t just need our admiration; it needs our protection.

My journey began in the world of luxury hospitality at the Taj Group, but my heart remained in the forest. I founded Nature Safari India with a simple belief: tourism must be a tool for conservation, not a threat to it. If the local communities and the ecosystem don’t benefit from our presence, then we have failed as travelers.

MeruVann is the culmination of that three-decade-long obsession. We didn’t want to build just another ‘luxury lodge.’ We wanted to build a sanctuary that gives back more than it takes. By choosing to be carbon-negative, by forgoing the vanity of a swimming pool to save water for the forest, and by planting thousands of native trees, we are making a statement.

When you stay with us, you aren’t just a guest; you are a custodian of the wild. You are part of a cycle that supports local schools, empowers forest guards, and ensures that the roar of the tiger continues to echo for generations to come.

Welcome to the jungle. Welcome home.

Sustainability & Conservation Commitment

Carbon Negative & 100% Solar Powered
MeruVann is founded on the principles of sustainability. MeruVann is powered by a 30-kW solar plant, making it one of the few lodges in Kanha that run entirely on Solar Energy. This ensures clean and renewable power across all its operations. With a sal forest covering more than 95% of the area of the lodge, MeruVann actively offsets more carbon than it produces, making it a carbon-negative property. Apart from that, we have planted around 20,000 trees and grasses in 45 acres of land near the buffer zone of Kanha tiger reserve in our effort to promote habitat restoration. Every stay here contributes to a much lighter footprint on the planet.
Water Conservation
Water is among Earth's most valuable resources, and at MeruVann, we make it a priority. Our lush, moist forests allow rainwater to soak into the soil, ensuring a steady supply throughout the year and minimising evaporation. By not having a swimming pool, MeruVann avoids unnecessary water waste. Both staff and guests are educated on water-saving practices. We've also fitted a low-flow faucet in our kitchen to cut down on water usage. The property is committed to respecting and reusing every drop.
Community Support
MeruVann believes that true sustainability includes people. The property actively supports the local community through employment, skill development, and meaningful engagement. We have contributed to the education and awareness of the village kids by supporting schools like Bhoor Singh School in Mukki. We also have fully adopted two primary schools, one in Khapa and another in Ghana village. We also support initiatives like Earth Brigade and Earth Focus, organizations working in the field of community development and nature conservation. Our guests become part of this larger purpose—where travel benefits both people and the planet.
Responsible Tourism Ethos
At MeruVann, responsible tourism forms an integral part of the guest experience. Each initiative is designed with a clear purpose: to support the preservation of forests that sustain wildlife and to collaborate with the communities dedicated to their protection. Guided by the principle that “true luxury encompasses both comfort and conscience,” MeruVann embeds conservation, education, and community empowerment into every aspect of its operations. Efforts include rewilding landscapes, advancing local economic opportunities, and fostering future generations through educational programs and outreach. Every stay thus contributes to restoring ecological balance and promoting long-term sustainability.
